The sale of new cigarettes with 95% less nicotine has been approved in the USA

A new type of cigarette that contains 95% less nicotine than traditional cigarettes has been approved by health officials of the US Food and Drug Administration. The company that will start marketing these low nicotine cigarettes first will be the 22nd Century Group.

The approval by U.S. senior health care officials therefore confirms the truthfulness of the claims that have been circulating in recent months regarding these cigarettes, which therefore contain a very low level of nicotine. Nicotine is a substance that occurs naturally in tobacco plants and is the main substance that leads to addiction. It can enter the body not only through smoking but also by chewing or consuming various other products that allow it to be taken.

However, the US health agency itself has given assurances that these are not safe products: although they contain less nicotine, these cigarettes cannot be considered safe tobacco products. Cigarettes can promote the development of various diseases, especially respiratory diseases, and they cause cancer and will continue to do so in the future.

However, Mitch Zeller, head of the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products, specifies that these new cigarettes still have the potential “to help reduce nicotine addiction among dependent smokers. All this at a time when the rate of smokers in the United States, as well as throughout the Western world, has dropped to an all-time low with 14% of adults involved in this practice (about 34 million Americans).
